Consistent Coverage

The world has become so depressing that I dred watching the news. Thanks to Mr. Miller I get to watch it every other night. But that doesn't stop me from dreading it, the terrifying clips and stories are overwhelmingly sad to any person with a heart. in the last two weeks Louisville has had a minimum of two shootings. the most widespread being the kroger shooting and the most recent was this morning when a jcps student was shot in the arm while getting on the bus. Limited information has been released about the events of this morning. However, WHAS11 has diligently covered the kroger shooting on their website. As much as I hate the story I am very glad that WHAS11 is keeping myself and the citizens of Louisville well informed. The website currently has stories with voices from multiple officials, regular updates on the victims and the shooter's case. This ties into WHAS11's obligation to give the citizens of Louisville an accurate explanation. According to the yardst

Civic Duty

Democracy is the foundation of our government. The process heavily relies on civic duty, people need to vote in order to honor this system.  In recent years number of voters seems to be on a downward trend. We can't expect change if we don't vote. WHAS11 is doing something about this with their Voter Voices campaign. The videos show a person standing in a poll both as they describe why they think voting is important. These videos are very encouraging as the people range in age, gender, and ethnicity.  Going back to our class discussion about the elements and yardsticks it is important for the news to encourage the public to participate in forum as much as they can. its understood that the forum element of good journalism is about encouraging the public to discuss the news but this loosely falls along those lines.  Much like the spike in registration after Taylor Swift's encouragement on Instagram, WHAS11 is a source that people trust. The public trusts WHAS11 enough to

Rain or Shine the News is Still Important

We can all agree that weather is important, I mean the weather decides what you wear and what you do to an extent, but do you really need to hear about the weather twice in 30 minutes? WHAS11 thinks you do! One thing that my Tv news group has noticed is that WHAS excessively covers the weather both on the 5 o'clock news and on their website. By now our group has watched the news a total of six times, and every night WHAS11 covers the news twice. Once at the beginning of the segment typically ranging one-two minutes in length, and again towards the end. the second coverage includes national weather reports and the seven day forecast, this story usually takes around five minutes. If we are talking extremes here that's about seven minutes every night spent on weather. If we assume that roughly ten minutes of the segment are spent on commercials, WHAS11 is spending almost half their show on weather. This would be more acceptable if the anchors didn't describe all of the n

Scary violations

Today  might be a day that society breaks the norms and lets everyone dress up and scare people solely to get candy. However, it is not a day in which news organizations should break journastic standards. Just because it is Halloween does not mean that WHAS11 should throw their standards out the door. Apparently WHAS11 believes that it is important that the citizens of Louisville know about High Point, NC and their facebook declarations. According to WHAS11 about a week ago High Points facebook sent out a message saying that Mary Jane Peanut Butter Kisses were not an acceptable candy to pass out. The full story can be found here;  https://www.whas11.com/article/entertainment/north-carolina-city-takes-a-stance-on-popular-halloween-candy-no-one-likes-them/417-609943206 The story lacks local relevance and newsworthiness , treak or treaters in North Carolina have no impact on the citizens of Louisville, nor does this event impact a large audience for a long time.  Under "Local Hea

Missing girl or Missing News?

Jayme Closs; a name that has appeared in the headlines nationwide for the past week. I'm sure that by now anyone who pays attention to the news has heard the story of the missing Wisconsin teen. If you watch WHAS11 the story is all  too familiar, seeing as the story appeared on the 5:00 pm nightly news three nights in a week! WHAS11 also felt the need to list 12 different stories about the teen on their website. ( https://www.whas11.com/search?q=jayme )  Every good journalist is held to certain standards, this includes local relevance. I'm sorry to say this but WHAS11 has violated this standard multiple times. Sad as it may be this teen's disappearance has no local relevance to the citizens of Louisville or its surrounding areas. The only people who should be hearing about this are the citizens of Wisconsin. Jayme's story does not contribute to a larger movement, rather it seems like a lazy excuse for the channels lack of relevant news this week. As we were discussi

One Question Quiz

Mr Miller’s one question quiz is hands down the most stressful yet rewarding part of J1. The past two quizzes have gone beyond explanations of topics discussed during lectures. The questions ask for application. Sure I can tell you all four binary models or the types of communication filters, but unless I can apply these topics and standards to the real world I haven’t actually learned anything. Today in class we took a quiz on the printing press, rather than asking the impacts the printing press had on society at the time it was invented, we were asked to invision what the world specifically our lives would be like if the press had never been invented. Mr Miller then called on everyone in class to describe one of the ways their life would be different.  As we went around the room the following question was posed; What is the purpose of highschool? Most of the room responded with to learn or prepare us for jobs. Mr Miller however made an interesting point that has been in my m

The Next Gutenburg

It's amazing to think that a single idea can shape the entire way our society functions. One invention can create a revolution of ideas that change our lives for the better. As new technologies are invented our capacity to learn and experience increases. It like the mandela effect; if one invention had never been made we would face an entirely different reality. One of the major inventions we owe our development to is the printing press. Invented by Gutenburg in 1450 the metal printing press resembled Bi Shengs clay movable type press. Gutenberg is credited with being one of the first to print bibles in the native language as opposed to Latin. His invention quite literally aided in revolutions  and greatly influenced our society today. If you think about it there isn’t a day that goes by without requiring you to read, even if your eyes simply skim a billboard or read a food label, our livelihood is dependent on written word. Without the printing press many of us wouldn’t be her
