Consistent Coverage


The world has become so depressing that I dred watching the news. Thanks to Mr. Miller I get to watch it every other night. But that doesn't stop me from dreading it, the terrifying clips and stories are overwhelmingly sad to any person with a heart. in the last two weeks Louisville has had a minimum of two shootings. the most widespread being the kroger shooting and the most recent was this morning when a jcps student was shot in the arm while getting on the bus.

Limited information has been released about the events of this morning. However, WHAS11 has diligently covered the kroger shooting on their website. As much as I hate the story I am very glad that WHAS11 is keeping myself and the citizens of Louisville well informed. The website currently has stories with voices from multiple officials, regular updates on the victims and the shooter's case.
This ties into WHAS11's obligation to give the citizens of Louisville an accurate explanation. According to the yardsticks of journalism media organizations need to give big picture reporting that explains the entire story,and tells us why we need to know. Every step of each story should be explained to the public and have multiple sources giving reliable fact checked information. The world already has enough issues, we don't need to add inadequate journalism to the list.

As we mourn the victims of this tragedy I hope that in the future WHAS11 continues to report important stores in this manner giving us every detail necessary to understand what has happened. As more information is provided WHAS11 should continue to report about the shooting this morning. One day I hope that WHAS11 will be able to diligently report a story that doesn't involve death.

Democracy is the foundation of our government. The process heavily relies on civic duty, people need to vote in order to honor this system.  In recent years number of voters seems to be on a downward trend. We can't expect change if we don't vote. WHAS11 is doing something about this with their Voter Voices campaign. The videos show a person standing in a poll both as they describe why they think voting is important. One Question Quiz

Mr Miller’s one question quiz is hands down the most stressful yet rewarding part of J1. The past two quizzes have gone beyond explanations of topics discussed during lectures. The questions ask for application. Sure I can tell you all four binary models or the types of communication filters, but unless I can apply these topics and standards to the real world I haven’t actually learned anything. Today in class we took a quiz on the printing press, rather than asking the impacts the printing press had on society at the time it was invented, we were asked to invision what the world specifically our lives would be like if the press had never been invented. Current Events

The current events quiz is probably one of my favorite parts of J1. The fact that I have to keep up with the news to get the grade I want seems like the perfect way to exspose J+C students to real world media. Before I only paid attention to the news when I found something intriguing or had heard about a big story. The current events quiz has coerced me into fully investing myself in learning about the happenings of the world. I love how Mr. Miller is encouraging us to learn about the world with this weekly quiz, however, I wish that we spent more time discussing the topics in class. If the topics are relevant enough for us to need to know about them , then I believe that they are relevant enough to spend more time discussing.  Because we have so much we need to learn, I understand that we aren’t able to take an entire class period to discuss the ten events on the quiz, but it would be nice to take ten minutes to discuss one of the topics in more depth.
