Elitists Vs. Populist

Fox news is liberal? That is not actually the case but imagine if Fox discovered they could make more money by switching from the conservative network cable watchers love, to a liberal network that appeals to younger audiences. Just imagining it is bizarre and totally appalling.

When white 2 journalism 1 was introduced to the elitist—populist binary model almost everyone agreed that being called an elitist was not a celebratory thing. When it comes to journalistic terms I am no longer so certain.

Populist media is known for giving the people what they want. On the other hand elitist media is known for distributing media that is believed by the creators to be what the people need.  The balance between these would be perfect media. However it is rare to find media that fits both qualities.

Fox news is an impostor, when it comes to the elitist—populist binary model. What would appear to be an elitist network that is passionate about informing the public with conservative news is actually far from that. Mr. Miller believes that if Fox news discovered they could make more money by becoming a liberal news network they would instantly fire Tucker Carlson and hire as many liberal hosts as possible.This fact is extremely alarming to me. I feel as if populist media companies are defying the basic principles of journalism. How can a company be trusted if it would completely change its ideals to earn an extra buck?

The elements describe good journalism as being independent and loyal. I had always believed that the reason Fox news and many other politically biased networks got away with somewhat bypassing these elements was because it was their anchors violating the elements, not the stories and information they presented. Now it seems as if populist media outlets bluntly ignore these elements.

While my peers may disagree, the term elitist is becoming more accepted in my mind. Elitist media may be viewed as snobs, but I'd much rather be seen as a snob that is passionate about reporting, than a hypocrite who is money hungry.

Civic Duty

Democracy is the foundation of our government. The process heavily relies on civic duty, people need to vote in order to honor this system.  In recent years number of voters seems to be on a downward trend. We can't expect change if we don't vote. WHAS11 is doing something about this with their Voter Voices campaign. The videos show a person standing in a poll both as they describe why they think voting is important. These videos are very encouraging as the people range in age, gender, and ethnicity.  Going back to our class discussion about the elements and yardsticks it is important for the news to encourage the public to participate in forum as much as they can. its understood that the forum element of good journalism is about encouraging the public to discuss the news but this loosely falls along those lines.  Much like the spike in registration after Taylor Swift's encouragement on Instagram, WHAS11 is a source that people trust. Missing girl or Missing News?

Jayme Closs; a name that has appeared in the headlines nationwide for the past week. I'm sure that by now anyone who pays attention to the news has heard the story of the missing Wisconsin teen. If you watch WHAS11 the story is all  too familiar, seeing as the story appeared on the 5:00 pm nightly news three nights in a week! WHAS11 also felt the need to list 12 different stories about the teen on their website. I'm sorry to say this but WHAS11 has violated this standard multiple times. Sad as it may be this teen's disappearance has no local relevance to the citizens of Louisville or its surrounding areas. The only people who should be hearing about this are the citizens of Wisconsin.
